P’sukei d’zimra

The siddur offers Psalms in this introductory section of the service as encouragement for the sacred act of prayer.  We are not the only ones praying, according to these ancient poems.  The sky prays, the sun prays, the trees pray, the birds pray, the ocean prays...each in their own language.  Each sings to God, out of their own longing.

It may at first seem strange to offer up words and song to a mysterious, invisible, silent God; but when we open our mouths in prayer, we are singing along with a vast choir, the  ten thousand voices of creation.
